Hey,
Quick story before the magic:
I was recently at one of my regular venues, doing what I do. And then my least favorite situation fell upon me… 4 different parties with multiple children in each one! LEt me be clear, I don’t hate children. However, I prefer not to do magic for them because there is always one or two who truly believe they know exactly how it all works and they need to be smarter than the magician for the admiration of the rest.
That being said, there was one young man (maybe 11yrs-13yrs) who ABSOLUTELY knew in his mind every single trick I was doing. I addressed it with him first very politely that just because he may have seen something similar before, it doesn’t mean this will be the same. At the end of each trick, before the reveal or solution, he would inaccurately make his claim. But his inaccuracy didn’t stop him from continuing the behavior. His parents didn’t step in to correct his behavior either. So, I had to just be stern at one point and leverage my performance against his behavior. I don’t enjoy doing that, but it was the only way to get him to stop.
Don’t be that person. Even if you actually know the solution or have seen it before, others haven’t. Let them enjoy it as a new experience.
Anyway…
🎩 The Magic Bit
A lie audiences love believing!
No matter when it happens, the audience favorite trick is my emoji cards. If you’ve seen it, you remember it’s the one where I guess before you which emoji card of the five you are about to play. And as you remember, I always get it right. I doubt you thought it was real magic, but you always allow yourself to be wrapped up in the mystery of “what if it was”.
When you rationalize it later, you know for certain that there’s no way it could be anything other than trickery, but that doesn’t matter to you. Just like with every magic trick, you enjoy believing the lie of magic. It brings you back to an innocent time for adult responsibilities kicked in. It takes you away from your stress and gives you some hope and wonder. And sometimes, you get the urge to beat it, so you ask to see it again (and again).
Of course, I won’t be sharing the secret with you. Just an understanding of why it’s so good. It plays upon our familiarity of something so simple (the emojis) and how our mind veiws and handles them. The trick itself was created years before emojis were ever thought of, but this version of it is colorful, large scale, and has enough humor in the images to presnt it in an aentertaining new way.
Next time you’re with me, ask me to do it again!
🧠 Dumb Thing I Learned This Week
How much it costs to produce a show! (facepalm) I probably should have waited until my business account had a bigger number before stepping into the show production, but it’s too late now. It will still be a fun time for all!
